Homeowners Insurance Claims

Homeowner’s insurance pays to repair or replace your house and/or personal property that is damaged or destroyed by an event or occurrence covered under your policy.  These events or occurrences are called covered losses.  Most Florida homeowner insurance policies cover losses caused by fire, lightning, smoke, explosion, theft, vandalism, riot, vehicles, aircrafts, windstorms, hurricanes, sudden water, and accidental water.

If you or someone you know has filed a homeowner’s insurance claim, or is thinking about filing a homeowner’s insurance claim, call us.  (786) 899-3500. We may be able to assist you.

Fire Damage

There are two types of Fire Damage claims: a total loss claim and a partial losses claim. A “complete loss fire damage claim” applies to cases where a home is completely destroyed by a fire.  A “partial losses fire claim” applies to instances where the home has only been partially destroyed.

If your home has suffered Fire Damage, complete or partial, make sure to do the following:

  1. Report the Claim to your Insurance Company;
  2. Make a written request to your insurance carrier for an advance on your fire damage insurance claim;
  3. Find temporary housing;
  4. Secure your property;
  5. Photograph and/or video record your damage;
  6. Make a list of all the items you lost;
  7. Get repair/replacement estimates;
  8. Gather and keep all receipts for your temporary living expenses;
  9. Continue paying your insurance premiums and mortgages;
  10. Alert your adjuster if you or a resident of your home has health sensitivities such as allergies or asthma; and
  11. Thoroughly inspect your roof, structural steel/iron, succo, siding, concrete, windows, plumbing, heating systems, and your interior walls/framing.

Hurricane Damage

Hurricanes can be devastating and life altering.  One’s safety is the most important thing during one of these natural disasters.  Once the winds have settled and the water has subsided, it’s time to file a Hurricane Claim with you Homeowner’s Insurance.

Florida Homeowner’s Insurance Policies have specific Hurricane provisions, exclusions, and limits.  One key provision is a Hurricane Deductible.   Hurricane Deductibles are a percentage of the value of the home dwelling. This percentage usually ranges from 2% to 15%.
